Why is it important to address respect in the classroom?
First and foremost it is important that educators model respect. Students observe educators for clues about behavior. If they observe teachers treating others with respect, they’re more likely to do the same. Children are constantly observing actions of others, especially in positions of authority. As educators, you can use our stories to further instill these concepts of respect, even building entire lessons and units around them.
Educators, families, and other adults in the community can help kids learn the value of respect. This can be done by talking about it, modeling it, and building it into your curriculum.
